Em resumo, é a diferença entre olhar e ver.
Sem resumo, é um estado mental que acontece quando você cruza essa linha do olhar casual e passa a “ver” - e por algum motivo se envolver com a imagem - absorvendo e contemplando.
Esse motivo leva o observador de um rápido olhar a um olhar mais próximo, é isto que me motiva, artisticamente falando.
Tudo acontece num instante, as respostas visuais são extremamente rápidas, e no momento em que você diminui o ritmo para esticar o tempo observando uma imagem, é quando a percepção muda e você cruzou a linha.
Nesses 3 ou 4 segundos, o observador está atento, em um olhar mais próximo, e cada segundo seguinte é uma conquista para o artista. Uma afirmação foi feita por um, e percebida pelo outro.
A criação é um processo evidentemente mais longo, mas tudo começa da mesma forma: Algo que vejo me impacta e quero fotografar, desenhar, pintar, alterar e recombinar até que aquela visão se torne em outra coisa, parecida, mas que não estava lá como antes.
Não quero ser literal na pintura, a referência fotográfica é a paleta original. No estado de "ver" existem infinitas possibilidades para escapar da realidade e distorcê-la com composições, formas, valores, cores e improvisação.
Na fotografia eu penso como quem pinta, só que mais rápido. E na edição e tratamento eu encontro fotos dentro das fotos, novos recortes, novas ideias. A mídia é diferente, mas o conceito é o mesmo.
Uns chamam de "olhar interior".
Pra mim, é UM OLHAR MAIS PRÓXIMO.

A CLOSER LOOK - Series
Series of digital and mixed media paintings on canvas and paper, mostly for Art Galleries and client commisions.
There´s a sharp line between looking and seeing.
Contemplation is a state of mind that starts when you cross that line towards seeing something and getting involved, absorbed by it for whatever reason.
This reason, that brings the viewer from one quick glance to a closer look is what keeps me moving, artwise.
It all happens in a split second, our visual responses are extremely fast, and the moment you slow down your pace to get a second reading at an image, that´s when perception changes and you cross the line.
There´s so much happening in the observer´s mind during those 3 or 4 seconds diving into a closer look, that every next second is a victory for the artist.
A statement was made, and then perceived.
My process is evidently longer, but it all starts just the same, when I´m struck by what I see, and it leads me to painting, altering, recombining, recoloring it, until that vision becomes something else, that wasn´t originally there.
I´m not searching for a literal reproduction of what I see. The photo reference is the original palette where I draw from, and once I´m into that contemplation state, there are endless possibilities to escape reality and twist it with composition, shapes, values, colors and improvisation.
That´s my mind´s eye in a nutshell.

Guida is the main character of a whimsical traditional animation by Rosana Urbes.
I was one of many invited artists to make a personal interpretation of Guida, posing for live model sessions, which was included in the final scenes of the movie.
I used dry pastels over Marrakech Paper for this painting.
